Established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department, this haven occupies a lush 25-acre coconut property along the banks of the Maha Oya River. Created to provide refuge for orphaned elephants, the orphanage has flourished over the years and is now home to about 84 elephants as of 2008.
